Greenhouse Heating Design & Temperature Requirements

Heating a greenhouse requires careful design to prevent large temperature swings and to allow efficient temperature control.

Our team develop solutions for single-zone and multi-zone greenhouses of all sizes, using our own pipework and control systems, supported by in-greenhouse aspirated temperature sensors. This approach ensures a high-quality, reliable system.

We use galvanised steel for all pipework and heaters, and our systems and controllers carry IP ratings suitable for greenhouse environments. Everything is designed to be intuitive and easy to operate, incorporating the latest technology to simplify daily use.

How to Calculate Greenhouse Temperature Lift

  • The key to deciding what kind of heat solution is needed, is to understand the temperature required to allow plants to flourish. We start with four basic bands:
    • Frost Free: 5 Deg C
    • Temperate: 10 Deg C
    • Warm: 15 Deg C
    • Propagation: 20 Deg C
  • We then balance these with the average low experienced in the country / region the glasshouse is located in. The difference between these two temperatures is the temperature lift needed to maintain a healthy environment for the plants.
    E.g. If you have an internal target temperature of 10 Deg C and it gets to -5 Deg C externally in the winter the temperature lift needed is 15 Deg C.
  • It is always good to consider what you might want to use the glasshouse for in the future, as installing a frost free system won’t enable you to generate higher temperatures should you ever need to. It is always possible to turn temperatures down, but not as easy to turn a system up beyond its installed temperature limit.

Greenhouse

  • Once the temperature lift is confirmed this can be used with the size of the greenhouse (in total and/or zonally) to calculate the power needed to deliver the heat required (we do this bit for you).
  • Generally as the glasshouse gets larger the heat demand will get bigger.
  • Another important consideration is to ensure that the heat delivery does not lead to plant dehydration. This is often caused by the directed hot air which fan heaters produce, which is why we do not recommend using hot air fan heaters in these settings.
